States’ Laws

Both Oregon and Washington have passed state laws to help carry out the compact in their states. Some of these laws explain how state rules work alongside the National Scenic Act, the compact, and other National Scenic Area authorities. These laws can be found in different chapters of each state’s legal code and administrative rules. The Columbia River Gorge Commission (Commission) keeps copies of these and would be happy to share them.

Other state laws that apply to state and local governments may not apply to the Commission. Figuring out which laws apply to the Commission and how they apply can be complex. If you have questions about this, please contact Gorge Commission staff—we’re happy to help.
